Now it came to pass, when Sanballat, and Tobiah, and Geshem the Arabian, and the rest of our enemies, heard that I had builded the wall, and [that] there was no breach left therein; (though at that time I had not set up the doors upon the gates;)
Nou was dit so, toe Sanballat, en Tobía, en Gesem die Arabier, en die rest van ons vyande gehoor het dat ek die muur gebou het, en dat daar geen bres daarin oorgebly het nie; (alhoewel tot op daardie tyd ek nog nie die deure op die poorte gesit het nie;)

That Sanballat and Geshem sent unto me, saying, Come, let us meet together in [some one of] the villages in the plain of Ono. But they thought to do me mischief.
Dat Sanballat en Gesem na my gestuur het, en gesê het, Kom, laat ons mekaar ontmoet in een van die dorpe in die vlakte van Ono. Maar hulle het gedink om my kwaad te doen.

And I sent messengers unto them, saying, I [am] doing a great work, so that I cannot come down: why should the work cease, whilst I leave it, and come down to you?
En ek het boodskappers na hulle gestuur, en gesê, Ek doen ’n groot werk, sodat ek nie kan afkom nie: waarom moet die werk ophou, terwyl ek dit laat vaar, en na julle afkom?

Yet they sent unto me four times after this sort; and I answered them after the same manner.
Nogtans het hulle na my gestuur volgens hierdie woord vier maal; en ek het hulle volgens dieselfde manier geantwoord.

Then sent Sanballat his servant unto me in like manner the fifth time with an open letter in his hand;
Toe het Sanballat sy dienaar na my gestuur volgens hierdie manier die vyfde maal met ‚'n oop brief in sy hand;

Wherein [was] written, It is reported among the heathen, and Gashmu saith [it, that] thou and the Jews think to rebel: for which cause thou buildest the wall, that thou mayest be their king, according to these words.
Waarin geskrywe was, Dit word onder die heidene gerapporteer, en Gasm sê dit, dat jy en die Jode dink om in opstand te kom: daarom bou jy die muur, dat jy hulle koning mag wees, volgens hierdie woorde.

And thou hast also appointed prophets to preach of thee at Jerusalem, saying, [There is] a king in Judah: and now shall it be reported to the king according to these words. Come now therefore, and let us take counsel together.
En jy het ook profete aangestel om van jou in Jérusalem te verkondig, en te sê, Daar is ’n koning in Juda: en nou sal dit aan die koning gerapporteer word volgens hierdie woorde. Kom nou daarom, en laat ons saam raadpleeg.

Then I sent unto him, saying, There are no such things done as thou sayest, but thou feignest them out of thine own heart.
Toe het ek na hom gestuur, en gesê, Daar is geen sulke dinge gedoen soos jy sê nie, maar jy versin hulle uit jou eie hart.

For they all made us afraid, saying, Their hands shall be weakened from the work, that it be not done. Now therefore, [O God], strengthen my hands.
Want hulle almal het ons bang gemaak, en gesê, Hulle hande sal van die werk verslap, dat dit nie gedoen word nie. Nou daarom, o God, versterk my hande.

Afterward I came unto the house of Shemaiah the son of Delaiah the son of Mehetabeel, who [was] shut up; and he said, Let us meet together in the house of God, within the temple, and let us shut the doors of the temple: for they will come to slay thee; yea, in the night will they come to slay thee.
Daarna het ek in die huis van Semája die seun van Delája die seun van Mehetabeël gekom, wat toegesluit was; en hy het gesê, Laat ons bymekaarkom in die huis van God, binne-in die tempel, en die deure van die tempel toesluit: want hulle sal kom om jou dood te maak; ja, in die nag sal hulle kom om jou dood te maak.

And I said, Should such a man as I flee? and who [is there], that, [being] as I [am], would go into the temple to save his life? I will not go in.
En ek het gesê, Moet so ’n man soos ek vlug? en wie is daar, wat, soos ek is, in die tempel sou ingaan om sy lewe te red? ek sal nie ingaan nie.

And, lo, I perceived that God had not sent him; but that he pronounced this prophecy against me: for Tobiah and Sanballat had hired him.
En kyk, ek het gemerk dat God hom nie gestuur het nie; maar dat hy hierdie profesie teen my gespreek het: want Tobía en Sanballat het hom gehuur.

Therefore [was] he hired, that I should be afraid, and do so, and sin, and [that] they might have [matter] for an evil report, that they might reproach me.
Daarom is hy gehuur, dat ek bevrees sou wees, en so doen, en sondig, en dat hulle ’n slegte rapport mag hê, dat hulle my mag smaad.

My God, think thou upon Tobiah and Sanballat according to these their works, and on the prophetess Noadiah, and the rest of the prophets, that would have put me in fear.
My God, dink aan Tobía en Sanballat volgens hierdie hulle werke, en ook aan die profeetgesin Noádja, en die rest van die profete, wat my bang wou maak.

So the wall was finished in the twenty and fifth [day] of [the month] Elul, in fifty and two days.
So is die muur dan voltooi in die vyf en twintigste dag van die maand Elul, in twee en vyftig dae.
16
And it came to pass, that when all our enemies heard [thereof], and all the heathen that [were] about us saw [these things], they were much cast down in their own eyes: for they perceived that this work was wrought of our God.
En dit was so, toe al ons vyande dit gehoor het, en al die heidene wat rondom ons was hierdie dinge gesien het, dat hulle baie in hulle eie oë neergewerp is: want hulle het gemerk dat hierdie werk deur onse God gedoen is.

Moreover in those days the nobles of Judah sent many letters unto Tobiah, and [the letters] of Tobiah came unto them.
Bowendien in daardie dae het die edeles van Juda baie briewe gestuur aan Tobía, en die briewe van Tobía het by hulle gekom.

For [there were] many in Judah sworn unto him, because he [was] the son in law of Shechaniah the son of Arah; and his son Johanan had taken the daughter of Meshullam the son of Berechiah.
Want daar was baie in Juda wat by eed aan hom verbind was, omdat hy die skoonseun was van Seganja die seun van Arag; en sy seun Johanan het die dogter van Mesullam die seun van Beregja geneem.

Also they reported his good deeds before me, and uttered my words to him. [And] Tobiah sent letters to put me in fear.
Ook het hulle sy goeie dade voor my gerapporteer, en my woorde aan hom uitgedra. En Tobía het briewe gestuur om my bang te maak.
