And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain: and when he was set, his disciples came unto him:

En toe Hy die skare gesien het, het Hy op ‚'n berg opgeklim: en toe Hy gaan sit het, het sy dissipels by Hom gekom:

And he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying,

En Hy het sy mond oopgemaak, en hulle geleer, sê,

Blessed [are] the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Geseënd is die armes van gees: want aan hulle behoort die koninkryk van die hemele.

Blessed [are] they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.

Geseënd is hulle wat treur: want hulle sal getroos word.

Blessed [are] the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.

Geseënd is die sagmoediges: want hulle sal die aarde beërwe.

Blessed [are] they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.

Geseënd is hulle wat honger en dors na die geregtigheid: want hulle sal versadig word.

Blessed [are] the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.

Geseënd is die barmhartiges: want hulle sal barmhartigheid ontvang.

Blessed [are] the pure in heart: for they shall see God.

Geseënd is die reines van hart: want hulle sal God sien.

Blessed [are] the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.

Geseënd is die vredemakers: want hulle sal kinders van God genoem word.

Blessed [are] they which are persecuted for righteousness’ sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Geseënd is hulle wat vervolg word om die geregtigheid ontwil: want aan hulle behoort die koninkryk van die hemele.

Blessed are ye, when [men] shall revile you, and persecute [you], and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.

Geseënd is julle, wanneer die mens julle uitskel, en julle vervolg, en allerhande kwaad teen julle sê vals, om My ontwil.

Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great [is] your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.

Verbly julle, en wees baie bly: want groot is julle loon in die hemele: want so het hulle die profete vervolg wat voor julle was.

Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.

Julle is die sout van die aarde: maar as die sout sy smaak verloor het, waarmee sal dit gesout word? dit is daarna tot niks nut nie, as om weggegooi en deur die mens vertrap te word.

Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.

Julle is die lig van die wêreld. ’n Stad wat op ’n berg lê, kan nie verborge wees nie.

Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.

En die mens steek ook nie ‚'n kers aan, en sit dit onder ‚'n maatemmer nie, maar op ‚'n kandelaar; en dit gee lig aan almal wat in die huis is.

Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

Laat julle lig so voor die mens skyn, dat hulle julle goeie werke mag sien, en julle Vader wat in die hemele is, verheerlik.

Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.

Moenie dink dat ek gekom het om die wet of die profete te vernietig nie: ek is nie gekom om te vernietig nie, maar om te vervul.

For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.

Want voorwaar sê ek vir julle, Totdat die hemel en die aarde verbygaan, sal nie een jota of een tittel van die wet enigsins verbygaan nie, totdat alles vervul is.

Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach [them], the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

Wie dan ook een van hierdie geringste gebooie verbreek, en die mense so leer, sal die geringste genoem word in die koninkryk van die hemele: maar wie dit doen en leer, dieselfde sal groot genoem word in die koninkryk van die hemele.

For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed [the righteousness] of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.

Want ek sê vir julle, Dat as julle geregtigheid nie die geregtigheid van die skrifgeleerdes en Fariseërs oortref nie, julle geensins in die koninkryk van die hemele sal ingaan nie.

Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment:

Julle het gehoor dat daar van ouds af tot die mense gesê is, Jy moet nie doodslaan nie; en wie ook al doodslaan sal in gevaar wees van die oordeel:

But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.

Maar ek sê vir julle, Dat elkeen wat toornig is op sy broer sonder ’n oorsaak sal in gevaar wees van die oordeel: en wie ook al tot sy broer sê, Raka, sal in gevaar wees van die raad: maar wie ook al sê, Jy dwaas, sal in gevaar wees van die helse vuur.

Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee;

Daarom as jy jou gawe na die altaar bring, en daar onthou dat jou broer iets teen jou het;

Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift.

Laat jou gawe daar voor die altaar, en gaan jou weg; word eers versoen met jou broer, en kom dan en offer jou gawe.

Agree with thine adversary quickly, whiles thou art in the way with him; lest at any time the adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison.

Stem gou saam met jou teëstander, terwyl jy nog met hom op die pad is; anders gebeur dit dat die teëstander jou aan die regter oorgee, en die regter jou aan die dienaar oorgee, en jy in die gevangenis gegooi word.

Verily I say unto thee, Thou shalt by no means come out thence, till thou hast paid the uttermost farthing.

Voorwaar sê ek vir jou, Jy sal daar geensins uitgaan nie, totdat jy die laaste pennie betaal het.

Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery:

Julle het gehoor dat daar van ouds af gesê is, Jy moet nie egbreuk pleeg nie:

But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.

Maar ek sê vir julle, Dat elkeen wat na ’n vrou kyk om haar te begeer, het alreeds egbreuk met haar in sy hart gepleeg.

And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast [it] from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not [that] thy whole body should be cast into hell.

En as jou regteroog jou laat struikel, ruk dit uit, en gooi dit van jou af: want dit is beter vir jou dat een van jou lede vergaan, en nie dat jou hele liggaam in die hel gegooi word nie.

And if thy right hand offend thee, cut it off, and cast [it] from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not [that] thy whole body should be cast into hell.

En as jou regterhand jou laat struikel, kap dit af, en gooi dit van jou af: want dit is beter vir jou dat een van jou lede vergaan, en nie dat jou hele liggaam in die hel gegooi word nie.

It hath been said, Whosoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorcement:

Daar is gesê, Wie ook al sy vrou wegstuur, laat hom haar ’n skeibrief gee:

But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery.

Maar ek sê vir julle, Dat wie ook al sy vrou wegstuur, behalwe vir die saak van hoerery, maak dat sy egbreuk pleeg: en wie ook al haar trou wat weggestuur is, pleeg egbreuk.

Again, ye have heard that it hath been said by them of old time, Thou shalt not forswear thyself, but shalt perform unto the Lord thine oaths:

Weer, julle het gehoor dat daar van ouds af tot die mense gesê is, Jy moet nie vals sweer nie, maar jy moet jou eed aan die Here volbring:

But I say unto you, Swear not at all; neither by heaven; for it is God’s throne:

Maar ek sê vir julle, Moet glad nie sweer nie; nie by die hemel nie; want dit is God se troon:

Nor by the earth; for it is his footstool: neither by Jerusalem; for it is the city of the great King.

En ook nie by die aarde nie; want dit is sy voetbank: en ook nie by Jérusalem nie; want dit is die stad van die groot Koning.

Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black.

En jy moet ook nie by jou hoof sweer nie, omdat jy nie een haar wit of swart kan maak nie.

But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil.

Maar laat julle woord wees, Ja, ja; Nee, nee: want wat meer as hierdie is, is uit die boosheid.

Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth:

Julle het gehoor dat daar gesê is, ’n Oog vir ’n oog, en ’n tand vir ’n tand:

But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.

Maar ek sê vir julle, Weerstaan nie die boosheid nie: maar wie jou ook al op jou regterwang slaan, draai ook die ander na hom toe.

And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have [thy] cloke also.

En as iemand jou wil aankla, en jou onderkleed neem, laat hom ook die mantel hê.

And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain.

En wie jou ook al dwing om een myl te gaan, gaan met hom twee.

Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away.

Gee aan hom wat jou vra, en wend jou nie af van hom wat van jou wil leen nie.

Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy.

Julle het gehoor dat daar gesê is, Jy moet jou naaste liefhê, en jou vyand haat.

But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;

Maar ek sê vir julle, Het julle vyande lief, seën dié wat julle vervloek, doen goed aan dié wat julle haat, en bid vir dié wat julle veronreg en vervolg;

That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.

Dat julle kinders mag wees van julle Vader wat in die hemele is: want Hy laat sy son opgaan oor die boos en die goeie, en stuur reën op die regverdige en die onregverdige.

For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same?

Want as julle dié liefhet wat julle liefhet, watter loon het julle? doen die tollenaars nie dieselfde nie?

And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more [than others]? do not even the publicans so?

En as julle net julle broers groet, wat doen julle meer as ander? doen die tollenaars nie so nie?

Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.

Wees julle daarom volmaak, net soos julle Vader wat in die hemele is, volmaak is.
