After this there was a feast of the Jews; and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.

Now there is at Jerusalem by the sheep [market] a pool, which is called in the Hebrew tongue Bethesda, having five porches.
Nou is daar in Jérusalem by die skaappoort ’n bad, wat in die Hebreeuse taal Betésda genoem word, met vyf paviljoene.

In these lay a great multitude of impotent folk, of blind, halt, withered, waiting for the moving of the water.
In hierdie het ’n groot menigte van siekes, blindes, verlamdes, verdordes, gelê, wat gewag het op die roering van die water.

For an angel went down at a certain season into the pool, and troubled the water: whosoever then first after the troubling of the water stepped in was made whole of whatsoever disease he had.
Want ’n engel het op ’n sekere seisoen in die bad afgekom, en die water geroer: elkeen dan wat eerste instap ná die roering van die water, is genees van watter siekte hy ook al gehad het.

And a certain man was there, which had an infirmity thirty and eight years.
En ‚'n sekere man was daar, wat agt en dertig jaar lank ‚'n siekte gehad het.

When Jesus saw him lie, and knew that he had been now a long time [in that case], he saith unto him, Wilt thou be made whole?
Toe Jesus hom sien lê, en weet dat hy nou al ’n lang tyd so was, sê Hy tot hom, Wil jy gesond word?

The impotent man answered him, Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool: but while I am coming, another steppeth down before me.
Die sieke man het Hom geantwoord, Heer, ek het geen mens, wanneer die water geroer word, om my in die bad te sit nie: maar terwyl ek kom, stap ‚'n ander voor my in.

Jesus saith unto him, Rise, take up thy bed, and walk.
Jesus sê tot hom, Staan op, neem jou bed op, en wandel.

And immediately the man was made whole, and took up his bed, and walked: and on the same day was the sabbath.
En dadelik is die man gesond gemaak, en hy het sy bed opgeneem, en gewandel: en op dieselfde dag was die sabbat.

The Jews therefore said unto him that was cured, It is the sabbath day: it is not lawful for thee to carry [thy] bed.
Die Jode sê daarom tot hom wat genees was, Dit is die sabbat: dit is nie geoorloof vir jou om die bed te dra nie.

He answered them, He that made me whole, the same said unto me, Take up thy bed, and walk.
Hy het hulle geantwoord, Hy wat my gesond gemaak het, dieselfde het tot my gesê, Neem jou bed op, en wandel.

Then asked they him, What man is that which said unto thee, Take up thy bed, and walk?
Toe het hulle hom gevra, Wat is die man wat tot jou gesê het, Neem jou bed op, en wandel?

And he that was healed wist not who it was: for Jesus had conveyed himself away, a multitude being in [that] place.
En hy wat genees was, het nie geweet wie dit was nie: want Jesus het Hom onttrek, ‚'n skare synde in daardie plek.
14
Afterward Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said unto him, Behold, thou art made whole: sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee.
Ná hierdie dinge vind Jesus hom in die tempel, en sê tot hom, Kyk, jy is gesond gemaak: sondig nie meer nie, anders kom daar iets ergers oor jou.

The man departed, and told the Jews that it was Jesus, which had made him whole.
Die man het weggegaan, en aan die Jode vertel dat dit Jesus was, wat hom gesond gemaak het.

And therefore did the Jews persecute Jesus, and sought to slay him, because he had done these things on the sabbath day.
En daarom het die Jode Jesus vervolg, en gesoek om Hom dood te maak, omdat Hy hierdie dinge op die sabbat gedoen het.

But Jesus answered them, My Father worketh hitherto, and I work.
Maar Jesus het hulle geantwoord, My Vader werk tot nou toe, en ek werk.

Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only had broken the sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself equal with God.
Daarom het die Jode des te meer gesoek om Hom dood te maak, omdat Hy nie alleen die sabbat gebreek het nie, maar ook gesê het dat God sy Vader was, Homself gelyk aan God makende.

Then answered Jesus and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise.
Toe het Jesus geantwoord en tot hulle gesê, Voorwaar, voorwaar sê ek vir julle, Die Seun kan niks uit Homself doen nie, behalwe wat Hy die Vader sien doen: want wat Hy ook al doen, dit doen die Seun net so.

For the Father loveth the Son, and sheweth him all things that himself doeth: and he will shew him greater works than these, that ye may marvel.
Want die Vader het die Seun lief, en toon Hom alle dinge wat Hy self doen: en Hy sal Hom groter werke as hierdie toon, dat julle julle mag verwonder.
21
For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth [them]; even so the Son quickeneth whom he will.
Want soos die Vader die dooies opwek, en lewend maak; so maak die Seun lewend wie Hy wil.
22
For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son:
Want die Vader oordeel niemand nie, maar het al die oordeel aan die Seun gegee:
23
That all [men] should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. He that honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father which hath sent him.
Dat almal die Seun mag eer, soos hulle die Vader eer. Hy wat die Seun nie eer nie, eer nie die Vader wat Hom gestuur het nie.
24
Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.
Voorwaar, voorwaar sê ek vir julle, Hy wat my woord hoor, en glo in Hom wat My gestuur het, het die ewige lewe, en kom nie in die oordeel nie; maar is oorgegaan van die dood tot die lewe.

Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live.
Voorwaar, voorwaar sê ek vir julle, Die uur kom, en is nou, wanneer die dooies die stem van die Seun van God sal hoor: en dié wat hoor, sal lewe.

For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself;
Want soos die Vader lewe in Homself het; so het Hy aan die Seun gegee om lewe in Homself te hê;
27
And hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the Son of man.
En het Hom ook gesag gegee om te oordeel, omdat Hy die Seun van die mens is.
28
Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice,
Verwonder julle nie hieroor nie: want die uur kom, waarin almal wat in die grafte is, sy stem sal hoor,
29
And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.
En sal uitgaan; dié wat goed gedoen het, tot die opstanding van die lewe; en dié wat kwaad gedoen het, tot die opstanding van die veroordeling.
30
I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me.
Ek kan van Myself niks doen nie: soos ek hoor, oordeel ek: en my oordeel is regverdig; omdat ek nie my eie wil soek nie, maar die wil van die Vader wat My gestuur het.

If I bear witness of myself, my witness is not true.
As ek van Myself getuig, is my getuienis nie waar nie.
32
There is another that beareth witness of me; and I know that the witness which he witnesseth of me is true.
Daar is ‚'n ander wat van My getuig; en ek weet dat die getuienis wat Hy van My getuig, waar is.
33
Ye sent unto John, and he bare witness unto the truth.
Julle het na Johannes gestuur, en hy het tot die waarheid getuig.
34
But I receive not testimony from man: but these things I say, that ye might be saved.
Maar ek ontvang nie getuienis van die mens nie: maar hierdie dinge sê ek, dat julle gered mag word.
35
He was a burning and a shining light: and ye were willing for a season to rejoice in his light.
Hy was ‚'n brandende en ‚'n skynende lig: en julle was gewillig om vir ‚'n seisoen in sy lig te juig.
36
But I have greater witness than [that] of John: for the works which the Father hath given me to finish, the same works that I do, bear witness of me, that the Father hath sent me.
Maar ek het ’n groter getuienis as dié van Johannes: want die werke wat die Vader My gegee het om te volbring, dieselfde werke wat ek doen, getuig van My, dat die Vader My gestuur het.

And the Father himself, which hath sent me, hath borne witness of me. Ye have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his shape.
En die Vader self, wat My gestuur het, het van My getuig. Julle het nooit sy stem gehoor, of sy gestalte gesien nie.
38
And ye have not his word abiding in you: for whom he hath sent, him ye believe not.
En julle het nie sy woord blywend in julle nie: want wie Hy gestuur het, Hom glo julle nie.
39
Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.
Ondersoek die Skrifte; want in hulle dink julle julle het die ewige lewe: en dit is hulle wat van My getuig.
40
And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life.
En julle wil nie tot My kom, dat julle lewe mag hê nie.
41
I receive not honour from men.
Ek ontvang nie eer van die mense nie.
42
But I know you, that ye have not the love of God in you.
Maar ek ken julle, dat julle die liefde van God nie in julle het nie.
43
I am come in my Father’s name, and ye receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive.
Ek is in my Vader se Naam gekom, en julle ontvang My nie: as ‚'n ander in sy eie naam kom, hom sal julle ontvang.
44
How can ye believe, which receive honour one of another, and seek not the honour that [cometh] from God only?
Hoe kan julle glo, wat eer van mekaar ontvang, en die eer wat van God alleen kom, nie soek nie?
45
Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father: there is [one] that accuseth you, [even] Moses, in whom ye trust.
Moenie dink dat ek julle by die Vader sal aankla nie: daar is een wat julle aankla, selfs Moses, in wie julle vertrou.
46
For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me: for he wrote of me.
Want as julle Moses geglo het, sou julle My geglo het: want hy het van My geskrywe.
47
But if ye believe not his writings, how shall ye believe my words?
Maar as julle sy geskrifte nie glo nie, hoe sal julle my woorde glo?
