Again there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them to present himself before the LORD.
Weer was daar ‚'n dag toe die seuns van God gekom het om voor die HERE te verskyn, en Satan het ook onder hulle gekom om voor die HERE te verskyn.

And the LORD said unto Satan, From whence comest thou? And Satan answered the LORD, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.
En die HERE het tot Satan gesê, Vanwaar kom jy? En Satan het die HERE geantwoord, en gesê, Van om heen en weer te gaan op die aarde, en van om daarin te wandel.

And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that [there is] none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil? and still he holdeth fast his integrity, although thou movedst me against him, to destroy him without cause.
En die HERE het tot Satan gesê, Het jy ag gegee op my dienaar Job, dat daar niemand soos hy op die aarde is nie, ’n volkome en ’n opreg man, een wat God vrees, en die kwaad vermy? en hy hou nog steeds sy opregtheid vas, alhoewel jy My teen hom aangehits het, om hom sonder oorsaak te vernietig.

And Satan answered the LORD, and said, Skin for skin, yea, all that a man hath will he give for his life.
En Satan het die HERE geantwoord, en gesê, Vel vir vel, ja, alles wat ’n man het sal hy gee vir sy lewe.

But put forth thine hand now, and touch his bone and his flesh, and he will curse thee to thy face.
Maar steek nou u hand uit, en raak aan sy been en sy vlees, en hy sal U in u aangesig vervloek.

And the LORD said unto Satan, Behold, he [is] in thine hand; but save his life.
En die HERE het tot Satan gesê, Kyk, hy is in jou hand; maar spaar sy lewe.

So went Satan forth from the presence of the LORD, and smote Job with sore boils from the sole of his foot unto his crown.
So het Satan dan van die teenwoordigheid van die HERE uitgegaan, en Job met pynlike swere van die sole van sy voet af tot by sy kroon getref.

And he took him a potsherd to scrape himself withal; and he sat down among the ashes.
En hy het vir hom ‚'n potskerf geneem om hom daarmee te skraap; en hy het tussen die as gesit.

Then said his wife unto him, Dost thou still retain thine integrity? curse God, and die.
Toe het sy vrou tot hom gesê, Hou jy nog steeds jou opregtheid vas? vervloek God, en sterwe.

But he said unto her, Thou speakest as one of the foolish women speaketh. What? shall we receive good at the hand of God, and shall we not receive evil? In all this did not Job sin with his lips.
Maar hy het tot haar gesê, Jy spreek soos een van die dwase vroue spreek. Wat? moet ons die goeie van God ontvang, en nie ook die kwaad ontvang nie? In dit alles het Job nie met sy lippe gesondig nie.

Now when Job’s three friends heard of all this evil that was come upon him, they came every one from his own place; Eliphaz the Temanite, and Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite: for they had made an appointment together to come to mourn with him and to comfort him.
Nou toe Job se drie vriende van al hierdie onheil wat oor hom gekom het, gehoor het, het hulle elkeen van sy eie plek gekom; Elifas die Temaniet, en Bildad die Sugiet, en Sofar die Naämatiet: want hulle het met mekaar afgespreek om te kom om met hom te treur, en om hom te vertroos.

And when they lifted up their eyes afar off, and knew him not, they lifted up their voice, and wept; and they rent every one his mantle, and sprinkled dust upon their heads toward heaven.
En toe hulle hulle oë van ver af opgeslaan het, en hom nie herken het nie, het hulle hulle stem verhef, en geween; en hulle het elkeen sy mantel geskeur, en stof na die hemel op hulle hoofde gestrooi.

So they sat down with him upon the ground seven days and seven nights, and none spake a word unto him: for they saw that [his] grief was very great.
So het hulle dan sewe dae en sewe nagte by hom op die grond gesit, en niemand het ‚'n woord tot hom gespreek nie: want hulle het gesien dat sy smart baie groot was.
