Man [that is] born of a woman [is] of few days, and full of trouble.

Die mens wat van ‚'n vrou gebore is, is van min dae, en vol van moeite.

He cometh forth like a flower, and is cut down: he fleeth also as a shadow, and continueth not.

Hy kom voort soos ‚'n blom, en word afgesny: hy vlug ook soos ‚'n skaduwee, en bly nie.

And dost thou open thine eyes upon such an one, and bringest me into judgment with thee?

Who can bring a clean [thing] out of an unclean? not one.

Wie kan ‚'n reine voortbring uit ‚'n onreine? nie een nie.

Seeing his days [are] determined, the number of his months [are] with thee, thou hast appointed his bounds that he cannot pass;

Turn from him, that he may rest, till he shall accomplish, as an hireling, his day.

For there is hope of a tree, if it be cut down, that it will sprout again, and that the tender branch thereof will not cease.

Though the root thereof wax old in the earth, and the stock thereof die in the ground;

Al is sy wortel in die aarde oud geword, en die stomp daarvan in die grond dood;

[Yet] through the scent of water it will bud, and bring forth boughs like a plant.

Tog sal dit deur die reuk van water uitspruit, en takke voortbring soos ‚'n plant.

10

But man dieth, and wasteth away: yea, man giveth up the ghost, and where [is] he?

Maar die mens sterwe, en vergaan: ja, die mens gee die gees, en waar is hy?

11

[As] the waters fail from the sea, and the flood decayeth and drieth up:

Soos die waters verdwyn uit die see, en die vloed opdroog en droog word:

12

So man lieth down, and riseth not: till the heavens [be] no more, they shall not awake, nor be raised out of their sleep.

So lê die mens neer, en staan nie op nie: totdat die hemele nie meer is nie, sal hulle nie ontwaak nie, en nie uit hulle slaap opgewek word nie.

13

O that thou wouldest hide me in the grave, that thou wouldest keep me secret, until thy wrath be past, that thou wouldest appoint me a set time, and remember me!

Ag, dat U my in die graf sou verberg, dat U my sou bewaar totdat u toorn verby is, dat U my ‚'n vasgestelde tyd sou stel, en my onthou!

If a man die, shall he live [again]? all the days of my appointed time will I wait, till my change come.

As ‚'n man sterwe, sal hy weer lewe? al die dae van my vasgestelde tyd sal ek wag, totdat my verandering kom.

15

Thou shalt call, and I will answer thee: thou wilt have a desire to the work of thine hands.

U sal roep, en ek sal U antwoord: U sal begeerte hê na die werk van u hande.

For now thou numberest my steps: dost thou not watch over my sin?

Want nou tel U my treë: vergewe U nie my sonde nie?

17

My transgression [is] sealed up in a bag, and thou sewest up mine iniquity.

My oortreding is in ’n sak verseël, en U voeg by my ongeregtigheid.

18

And surely the mountain falling cometh to nought, and the rock is removed out of his place.

En sekerlik die berg wat val, kom tot niet, en die rots word uit sy plek verwyder.

19

The waters wear the stones: thou washest away the things which grow [out] of the dust of the earth; and thou destroyest the hope of man.

Die waters slyt die klippe: U spoel weg die dinge wat uit die stof van die aarde voortkom; en U vernietig die hoop van die mens.

20

Thou prevailest for ever against him, and he passeth: thou changest his countenance, and sendest him away.

U seëvier vir ewig teen hom, en hy gaan heen: U verander sy aangesig, en stuur hom weg.

21

His sons come to honour, and he knoweth [it] not; and they are brought low, but he perceiveth [it] not of them.

Sy seuns kom tot eer, en hy weet dit nie; en hulle word gering, maar hy merk dit nie van hulle nie.

22

But his flesh upon him shall have pain, and his soul within him shall mourn.

Maar sy vlees op hom sal pyn hê, en sy siel in hom sal treur.
