Now when Jacob saw that there was corn in Egypt, Jacob said unto his sons, Why do ye look one upon another?
Nou het Jakob gesien dat daar koring in Egipte was, en Jakob het tot sy seuns gesê, Waarom kyk julle na mekaar?

And he said, Behold, I have heard that there is corn in Egypt: get you down thither, and buy for us from thence; that we may live, and not die.
En hy het gesê, Kyk, ek het gehoor dat daar koring in Egipte is: gaan af daarheen, en koop vir ons van daar, dat ons mag lewe, en nie sterwe nie.

And Joseph’s ten brethren went down to buy corn in Egypt.
En Josef se tien broers het afgegaan om koring uit Egipte te koop.

But Benjamin, Joseph’s brother, Jacob sent not with his brethren; for he said, Lest peradventure mischief befall him.
Maar Benjamin, Josef se broer, het Jakob nie saam met sy broers gestuur nie; want hy het gesê, Dat hom nie dalk ’n ongeluk oorkom nie.

And the sons of Israel came to buy [corn] among those that came: for the famine was in the land of Canaan.
En die seuns van Israel het gekom om te koop onder die wat gekom het: want die hongersnood was in die land Kanaän.

And Joseph [was] the governor over the land, [and] he [it was] that sold to all the people of the land: and Joseph’s brethren came, and bowed down themselves before him [with] their faces to the earth.
En Josef was die heerser oor die land, en hy was dit wat aan al die mense van die land verkoop het: en Josef se broers het gekom, en voor hom met die aangesig na die aarde gebuig.

And Joseph saw his brethren, and he knew them, but made himself strange unto them, and spake roughly unto them; and he said unto them, Whence come ye? And they said, From the land of Canaan to buy food.
En Josef het sy broers gesien, en hy het hulle herken, maar hy het homself vreemd teenoor hulle gemaak, en hard met hulle gespreek; en hy het tot hulle gesê, Vanwaar kom julle? En hulle het gesê, Uit die land Kanaän, om voedsel te koop.

And Joseph knew his brethren, but they knew not him.
En Josef het sy broers herken, maar hulle het hom nie herken nie.

And Joseph remembered the dreams which he dreamed of them, and said unto them, Ye [are] spies; to see the nakedness of the land ye are come.
En Josef het die drome onthou wat hy van hulle gedroom het, en tot hulle gesê, Julle is spioene; om te sien die naaktheid van die land het julle gekom.
10
And they said unto him, Nay, my lord, but to buy food are thy servants come.
En hulle het tot hom gesê, Nee, my heer, maar jou dienaars het gekom om voedsel te koop.
11
We [are] all one man’s sons; we [are] true [men], thy servants are no spies.
Ons is almal een man se seuns; ons is opregte manne, jou dienaars is nie spioene nie.
12
And he said unto them, Nay, but to see the nakedness of the land ye are come.
En hy het tot hulle gesê, Nee, maar om die naaktheid van die land te sien het julle gekom.
13
And they said, Thy servants [are] twelve brethren, the sons of one man in the land of Canaan; and, behold, the youngest [is] this day with our father, and one [is] not.
En hulle het gesê, Jou dienaars is twaalf broers, die seuns van een man in die land Kanaän; en kyk, die jongste is vandag by ons vader, en een is daar nie meer nie.

And Joseph said unto them, That [is it] that I spake unto you, saying, Ye [are] spies:
En Josef het tot hulle gesê, Dit is dit wat ek tot julle gespreek het, en gesê, Julle is spioene:
15
Hereby ye shall be proved: By the life of Pharaoh ye shall not go forth hence, except your youngest brother come hither.
Hieraan sal julle beproef word: By die lewe van Farao, julle sal nie hiervandaan uitgaan nie, tensy julle jongste broer hier kom.
16
Send one of you, and let him fetch your brother, and ye shall be kept in prison, that your words may be proved, whether [there be any] truth in you: or else by the life of Pharaoh surely ye [are] spies.
Stuur een van julle, en laat hom julle broer haal, en julle sal gebind bly, dat julle woorde beproef mag word, of daar waarheid in julle is: of anders, by die lewe van Farao, sekerlik is julle spioene.

And he put them all together into ward three days.
En hy het hulle almal saam drie dae in bewaring gesit.

And Joseph said unto them the third day, This do, and live; [for] I fear God:
En Josef het op die derde dag tot hulle gesê, Doen dit, en lewe; want ek vrees God:
19
If ye [be] true [men], let one of your brethren be bound in the house of your prison: go ye, carry corn for the famine of your houses:
As julle opregte manne is, laat een van julle broers gebind wees in die huis van julle bewaring: gaan julle, bring koring vir die hongersnood van julle huise:
20
But bring your youngest brother unto me; so shall your words be verified, and ye shall not die. And they did so.
Maar bring julle jongste broer na my; so sal julle woorde bevestig word, en julle sal nie sterwe nie. En hulle het so gedoen.
21
And they said one to another, We [are] verily guilty concerning our brother, in that we saw the anguish of his soul, when he besought us, and we would not hear; therefore is this distress come upon us.
En hulle het die een tot die ander gesê, Ons is waarlik skuldig aangaande ons broer, in dié dat ons die benoudheid van sy siel gesien het, toe hy ons gesmeek het, en ons nie wou luister nie; daarom kom hierdie benoudheid oor ons.

And Reuben answered them, saying, Spake I not unto you, saying, Do not sin against the child; and ye would not hear? therefore, behold, also his blood is required.
En Ruben het hulle geantwoord, en gesê, Het ek nie tot julle gesê, Moenie teen die kind sondig nie; en julle wou nie luister nie? daarom, kyk, sy bloed word ook geëis.

And they knew not that Joseph understood [them]; for he spake unto them by an interpreter.
En hulle het nie geweet dat Josef dit verstaan het nie; want daar was ’n tolk tussen hulle.
24
And he turned himself about from them, and wept; and returned to them again, and communed with them, and took from them Simeon, and bound him before their eyes.
En hy het hom van hulle afgewend, en gehuil; en hy het weer na hulle teruggekeer, en met hulle gespreek, en Simeon van hulle geneem, en hom voor hulle oë gebind.

Then Joseph commanded to fill their sacks with corn, and to restore every man’s money into his sack, and to give them provision for the way: and thus did he unto them.
Toe het Josef bevel gegee dat hulle sakke met koring gevul word, en elkeen se geld in sy sak teruggegee word, en om hulle padkos te gee: en so is aan hulle gedoen.

And they laded their asses with the corn, and departed thence.
En hulle het hulle koring op hulle esels gelaai, en van daar weggegaan.
27
And as one of them opened his sack to give his ass provender in the inn, he espied his money; for, behold, it [was] in his sack’s mouth.
En toe een sy sak oopmaak om sy esel voer te gee in die herberg, het hy sy geld gesien; want kyk, dit was in die mond van sy sak.

And he said unto his brethren, My money is restored; and, lo, [it is] even in my sack: and their heart failed [them], and they were afraid, saying one to another, What [is] this [that] God hath done unto us?
En hy het tot sy broers gesê, My geld is teruggegee; en kyk, dit is selfs in my sak: en hulle hart het hulle begewe, en hulle het bewend die een tot die ander gesê, Wat is dit wat God ons aangedoen het?

And they came unto Jacob their father unto the land of Canaan, and told him all that befell unto them; saying,
En hulle het by Jakob hulle vader in die land Kanaän gekom, en hom alles vertel wat hulle oorgekom het, en gesê,
30
The man, [who is] the lord of the land, spake roughly to us, and took us for spies of the country.
Die man, die heer van die land, het hard met ons gespreek, en ons vir spioene van die land aangesien.
31
And we said unto him, We [are] true [men]; we are no spies:
En ons het tot hom gesê, Ons is opregte manne; ons is nie spioene nie:
32
We [be] twelve brethren, sons of our father; one [is] not, and the youngest [is] this day with our father in the land of Canaan.
Ons is twaalf broers, seuns van ons vader; een is daar nie meer nie, en die jongste is vandag by ons vader in die land Kanaän.
33
And the man, the lord of the country, said unto us, Hereby shall I know that ye [are] true [men]; leave one of your brethren [here] with me, and take [food for] the famine of your households, and be gone:
En die man, die heer van die land, het tot ons gesê, Hieraan sal ek weet dat julle opregte manne is; laat een van julle broers hier by my, en neem vir die hongersnood van julle huise, en gaan:

And bring your youngest brother unto me: then shall I know that ye [are] no spies, but [that] ye [are] true [men: so] will I deliver you your brother, and ye shall traffick in the land.
En bring julle jongste broer na my: dan sal ek weet dat julle nie spioene is nie, maar dat julle opregte manne is: so sal ek julle broer aan julle gee, en julle sal in die land handel.

And it came to pass as they emptied their sacks, that, behold, every man’s bundle of money [was] in his sack: and when [both] they and their father saw the bundles of money, they were afraid.
En dit het gebeur toe hulle hulle sakke leegmaak, dat kyk, elkeen se geldsaam was in sy sak: en toe hulle en hulle vader die geldsaamtjies sien, was hulle bevrees.

And Jacob their father said unto them, Me have ye bereaved [of my children]: Joseph [is] not, and Simeon [is] not, and ye will take Benjamin [away]: all these things are against me.
En Jakob hulle vader het tot hulle gesê, Julle het my kinders berowe: Josef is daar nie, en Simeon is daar nie, en julle wil Benjamin wegneem: al hierdie dinge is teen my.

And Reuben spake unto his father, saying, Slay my two sons, if I bring him not to thee: deliver him into my hand, and I will bring him to thee again.
En Ruben het tot sy vader gespreek, en gesê, Maak my twee seuns dood, as ek hom nie na jou bring nie: gee hom in my hand, en ek sal hom na jou terugbring.
38
And he said, My son shall not go down with you; for his brother is dead, and he is left alone: if mischief befall him by the way in the which ye go, then shall ye bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to the grave.
En hy het gesê, My seun sal nie saam met julle afgaan nie; want sy broer is dood, en hy het alleen oorgebly: as hom ’n ongeluk oorkom op die pad waarop julle gaan, dan sal julle my grys hare met smart in die doderyk laat afdaal.
