1
Thus hath the Lord GOD shewed unto me; and, behold, he formed grasshoppers in the beginning of the shooting up of the latter growth; and, lo, [it was] the latter growth after the king’s mowings.
So het die Here GOD my gewys: en kyk, Hy het sprinkane gevorm in die begin van die uitspruiting van die laatreën; en kyk, dit was die laatreën ná die koning se maaisels.

And it came to pass, [that] when they had made an end of eating the grass of the land, then I said, O Lord GOD, forgive, I beseech thee: by whom shall Jacob arise? for he [is] small.
En dit het gebeur, toe hulle die gras van die land heeltemal opgeëet het, toe het ek gesê, o Here GOD, vergeef, ek bid U: deur wie sal Jakob opstaan? want hy is klein.

The LORD repented for this: It shall not be, saith the LORD.
Die HERE het Hom berou hieroor: Dit sal nie wees nie, sê die HERE.

Thus hath the Lord GOD shewed unto me: and, behold, the Lord GOD called to contend by fire, and it devoured the great deep, and did eat up a part.
So het die Here GOD my gewys: en kyk, die Here GOD het tot twis deur vuur geroep, en dit het die groot diepte verteer, en het ’n deel opgeëet.

Then said I, O Lord GOD, cease, I beseech thee: by whom shall Jacob arise? for he [is] small.
Toe het ek gesê, o Here GOD, hou op, ek bid U: deur wie sal Jakob opstaan? want hy is klein.

The LORD repented for this: This also shall not be, saith the Lord GOD.
Die HERE het Hom berou hieroor: Dit sal ook nie wees nie, sê die Here GOD.

Thus he shewed me: and, behold, the Lord stood upon a wall [made] by a plumbline, with a plumbline in his hand.
So het Hy my gewys: en kyk, die Here het op ‚'n muur gestaan wat met ‚'n skietlood gemaak is, met ‚'n skietlood in sy hand.

And the LORD said unto me, Amos, what seest thou? And I said, A plumbline. Then said the Lord, Behold, I will set a plumbline in the midst of my people Israel: I will not again pass by them any more:
En die HERE het tot my gesê, Amos, wat sien jy? En ek het gesê, ’n Skietlood. Toe het die Here gesê, Kyk, ek sal ’n skietlood in die midde van my volk Israel sit: ek sal nie meer verbygaan by hulle nie:

And the high places of Isaac shall be desolate, and the sanctuaries of Israel shall be laid waste; and I will rise against the house of Jeroboam with the sword.
En die hoë plekke van Isak sal verwoes word, en die heiligdomme van Israel sal verwoes word; en ek sal opstaan teen die huis van Jéróbeam met die swaard.

Then Amaziah the priest of Bethel sent to Jeroboam king of Israel, saying, Amos hath conspired against thee in the midst of the house of Israel: the land is not able to bear all his words.
Toe het Amasja die priester van Bet-El tot Jéróbeam koning van Israel gestuur, sê, Amos het ’n sameswering teen jou in die midde van die huis van Israel gemaak: die land is nie in staat om al sy woorde te verdra nie.

For thus Amos saith, Jeroboam shall die by the sword, and Israel shall surely be led away captive out of their own land.
Want so sê Amos, Jéróbeam sal deur die swaard sterwe, en Israel sal sekerlik in gevangenisskap uit hulle eie land weggevoer word.

Also Amaziah said unto Amos, O thou seer, go, flee thee away into the land of Judah, and there eat bread, and prophesy there:
Ook het Amasja tot Amos gesê, o jy siener, gaan, vlug in die land van Juda, en eet daar brood, en profeteer daar:

But prophesy not again any more at Bethel: for it [is] the king’s chapel, and it [is] the king’s court.
Maar profeteer nie meer by Bet-El nie: want dit is die koning se kapel, en dit is die koning se hof.
14
Then answered Amos, and said to Amaziah, I [was] no prophet, neither [was] I a prophet’s son; but I [was] an herdman, and a gatherer of sycomore fruit:
Toe het Amos geantwoord en tot Amasja gesê, Ek was geen profeet nie, en ook nie ’n profeet se seun nie; maar ek was ’n veewagter, en ’n bymekaarmaakker van wilde vyeboom vrugte:

And the LORD took me as I followed the flock, and the LORD said unto me, Go, prophesy unto my people Israel.
En die HERE het my geneem soos ek agter die kudde aangegaan het, en die HERE het tot my gesê, Gaan, profeteer tot my volk Israel.

Now therefore hear thou the word of the LORD: Thou sayest, Prophesy not against Israel, and drop not [thy word] against the house of Isaac.
Nou hoor daarom die woord van die HERE: Jy sê, Profeteer nie teen Israel nie, en drup nie jou woord teen die huis van Isak nie.
17
Therefore thus saith the LORD; Thy wife shall be an harlot in the city, and thy sons and thy daughters shall fall by the sword, and thy land shall be divided by line; and thou shalt die in a polluted land: and Israel shall surely go into captivity forth of his land.
Daarom so sê die HERE; Jou vrou sal die hoer speel in die stad, en jou seuns en jou dogters sal deur die swaard val, en jou land sal deur lyn verdeel word; en jy sal in ’n onrein land sterwe: en Israel sal sekerlik in gevangenisskap uit sy land weggevoer word.
