Now the days of David drew nigh that he should die; and he charged Solomon his son, saying,

Nou het die dae van Dawid nader gekom dat hy sou sterwe; en hy het sy seun Salomo beveel, en gesê,

I go the way of all the earth: be thou strong therefore, and shew thyself a man;

Ek gaan die pad van die hele aarde: wees daarom sterk, en bewys jou as ‚'n man;

And keep the charge of the LORD thy God, to walk in his ways, to keep his statutes, and his commandments, and his judgments, and his testimonies, as it is written in the law of Moses, that thou mayest prosper in all that thou doest, and whithersoever thou turnest thyself:

En sorg dat jy die bevel van die HERE jou God onderhou, om in sy weë te wandel, om sy insettinge, en sy gebooie, en sy oordele, en sy getuienisse te bewaar, soos geskrywe is in die wet van Moses, dat jy mag voorspoedig wees in alles wat jy doen, en waarheen jy jou ook al wend:

That the LORD may continue his word which he spake concerning me, saying, If thy children take heed to their way, to walk before me in truth with all their heart and with all their soul, there shall not fail thee (said he) a man on the throne of Israel.

Dat die HERE sy woord mag bevestig wat Hy aangaande my gespreek het, en gesê het, As jou kinders op hulle weg ag gee, om voor My in waarheid te wandel met hulle hele hart en met hulle hele siel, sal daar nie vir jou ’n man ontbreek op die troon van Israel nie.

Moreover thou knowest also what Joab the son of Zeruiah did to me, [and] what he did to the two captains of the hosts of Israel, unto Abner the son of Ner, and unto Amasa the son of Jether, whom he slew, and shed the blood of war in peace, and put the blood of war upon his girdle that [was] about his loins, and in his shoes that [were] on his feet.

Bowendien weet jy ook wat Joab die seun van Serúja aan my gedoen het, wat hy aan die twee owerstes van die leërs van Israel gedoen het, aan Abner die seun van Ner, en aan Amasa die seun van Jeter, wat hy doodgemaak het, en bloed van oorlog in vrede gestort het, en die bloed van oorlog aan sy gordel wat om sy heupe was, en aan sy skoene wat aan sy voete was, gesit het.

Do therefore according to thy wisdom, and let not his hoar head go down to the grave in peace.

Doen daarom volgens jou wysheid, en laat sy grys hare nie in vrede in die graf neerdal nie.

But shew kindness unto the sons of Barzillai the Gileadite, and let them be of those that eat at thy table: for so they came to me when I fled because of Absalom thy brother.

Maar bewys barmhartigheid aan die seuns van Barsillai die Gíleadiet, en laat hulle wees onder dié wat aan jou tafel eet: want so het hulle by my gekom toe ek van Absalom jou broer gevlug het.

And, behold, [thou hast] with thee Shimei the son of Gera, a Benjamite of Bahurim, which cursed me with a grievous curse in the day when I went to Mahanaim: but he came down to meet me at Jordan, and I sware to him by the LORD, saying, I will not put thee to death with the sword.

En kyk, by jou is Símeï die seun van Gera, ’n Benjamiet van Bahurim, wat my met ’n grimmige vervloeking gevloek het die dag toe ek na Mahánaïm gegaan het: maar hy het afgekom om my by die Jordaan tegemoet te gaan, en ek het aan hom by die HERE gesweer, en gesê, Ek sal jou nie met die swaard doodmaak nie.

Now therefore hold him not guiltless: for thou [art] a wise man, and knowest what thou oughtest to do unto him; but his hoar head bring thou down to the grave with blood.

Nou dan, hou hom nie onskuldig nie: want jy is ‚'n wyse man, en weet wat jy aan hom moet doen; maar bring sy grys hare met bloed in die graf neer.

So David slept with his fathers, and was buried in the city of David.

So het Dawid dan by sy vaders ontslaap, en is in die stad van Dawid begrawe.

And the days that David reigned over Israel [were] forty years: seven years reigned he in Hebron, and thirty and three years reigned he in Jerusalem.

En die dae wat Dawid oor Israel geregeer het, was veertig jaar: sewe jaar het hy in Hebron geregeer, en drie en dertig jaar het hy in Jérusalem geregeer.

Then sat Solomon upon the throne of David his father; and his kingdom was established greatly.

Toe het Salomo op die troon van Dawid sy vader gaan sit; en sy koninkryk is baie bevestig.

And Adonijah the son of Haggith came to Bathsheba the mother of Solomon. And she said, Comest thou peaceably? And he said, Peaceably.

En Adonía die seun van Haggit het by Batseba die moeder van Salomo gekom. En sy het gesê, Kom jy in vrede? En hy het gesê, In vrede.

He said moreover, I have somewhat to say unto thee. And she said, Say on.

Hy het verder gesê, Ek het iets om met jou te sê. En sy het gesê, Sê aan.

And he said, Thou knowest that the kingdom was mine, and [that] all Israel set their faces on me, that I should reign: howbeit the kingdom is turned about, and is become my brother’s: for it was his from the LORD.

En hy het gesê, Jy weet dat die koninkryk myne was, en dat die hele Israel sy aangesig op my gerig het, dat ek koning sou wees: nogtans is die koninkryk omgedraai, en het my broer se eiendom geword: want dit was van die HERE syne.

And now I ask one petition of thee, deny me not. And she said unto him, Say on.

En nou vra ek een versoek van jou, moenie my weier nie. En sy het tot hom gesê, Sê aan.

And he said, Speak, I pray thee, unto Solomon the king, (for he will not say thee nay,) that he give me Abishag the Shunammite to wife.

En hy het gesê, Spreek tog tot Salomo die koning, (want hy sal jou nie weier nie,) dat hy my Abísag die Sunamitiese tot vrou gee.

And Bathsheba said, Well; I will speak for thee unto the king.

En Batseba het gesê, Goed; ek sal namens jou met die koning spreek.

Bathsheba therefore went unto king Solomon, to speak unto him for Adonijah. And the king rose up to meet her, and bowed himself unto her, and sat down on his throne, and caused a seat to be set for the king’s mother; and she sat on his right hand.

Batseba het dus by koning Salomo ingegaan om namens Adonía met hom te spreek. En die koning het opgestaan om haar tegemoet te gaan, en voor haar gebuig, en op sy troon gaan sit, en ’n stoel vir die koning se moeder laat sit; en sy het aan sy regterhand gesit.

Then she said, I desire one small petition of thee; [I pray thee], say me not nay. And the king said unto her, Ask on, my mother: for I will not say thee nay.

Toe het sy gesê, Ek begeer een klein versoek van jou; moenie my weier nie. En die koning het tot haar gesê, Vra aan, my moeder: want ek sal jou nie weier nie.

And she said, Let Abishag the Shunammite be given to Adonijah thy brother to wife.

En sy het gesê, Laat Abísag die Sunamitiese aan Adonía jou broer tot vrou gegee word.

And king Solomon answered and said unto his mother, And why dost thou ask Abishag the Shunammite for Adonijah? ask for him the kingdom also; for he [is] mine elder brother; even for him, and for Abiathar the priest, and for Joab the son of Zeruiah.

En koning Salomo het geantwoord en tot sy moeder gesê, En waarom vra jy Abísag die Sunamitiese vir Adonía? vra vir hom die koninkryk ook; want hy is my ouer broer; selfs vir hom, en vir Abjatar die priester, en vir Joab die seun van Serúja.

Then king Solomon sware by the LORD, saying, God do so to me, and more also, if Adonijah have not spoken this word against his own life.

Toe het koning Salomo by die HERE gesweer, en gesê, So moet God aan my doen, en meer ook, as Adonía nie hierdie woord teen sy eie lewe gespreek het nie.

Now therefore, [as] the LORD liveth, which hath established me, and set me on the throne of David my father, and who hath made me an house, as he promised, Adonijah shall be put to death this day.

Nou dan, so waar as die HERE lewe, wat my bevestig het, en my op die troon van Dawid my vader gesit het, en wat my ’n huis gemaak het, soos Hy beloof het, sal Adonía vandag gedood word.

And king Solomon sent by the hand of Benaiah the son of Jehoiada; and he fell upon him that he died.

En koning Salomo het dit deur die hand van Benája die seun van Jójada gestuur; en hy het op hom geval dat hy gesterwe het.

And unto Abiathar the priest said the king, Get thee to Anathoth, unto thine own fields; for thou [art] worthy of death: but I will not at this time put thee to death, because thou barest the ark of the Lord GOD before David my father, and because thou hast been afflicted in all wherein my father was afflicted.

En tot Abjatar die priester het die koning gesê, Gaan na Anatot, na jou eie velde; want jy is ’n man van die dood: maar ek sal jou nie hierdie dag doodmaak nie, omdat jy die ark van die Here HERE voor Dawid my vader gedra het, en omdat jy in al verdruk is waarin my vader verdruk is.

So Solomon thrust out Abiathar from being priest unto the LORD; that he might fulfil the word of the LORD, which he spake concerning the house of Eli in Shiloh.

So het Salomo dan Abjatar uit die priesterskap van die HERE uitgesit; dat hy die woord van die HERE sou vervul, wat Hy aangaande die huis van Eli in Silo gespreek het.

Then tidings came to Joab: for Joab had turned after Adonijah, though he turned not after Absalom. And Joab fled unto the tabernacle of the LORD, and caught hold on the horns of the altar.

Toe het die tyding by Joab gekom: want Joab het agter Adonía aangegaan, al het hy nie agter Absalom aangegaan nie. En Joab het na die tabernakel van die HERE gevlug, en die horings van die altaar gegryp.

And it was told king Solomon that Joab was fled unto the tabernacle of the LORD; and, behold, [he is] by the altar. Then Solomon sent Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, saying, Go, fall upon him.

En dit is aan koning Salomo vertel dat Joab na die tabernakel van die HERE gevlug het; en kyk, hy is by die altaar. Toe het Salomo Benája die seun van Jójada gestuur, en gesê, Gaan, val op hom.

And Benaiah came to the tabernacle of the LORD, and said unto him, Thus saith the king, Come forth. And he said, Nay; but I will die here. And Benaiah brought the king word again, saying, Thus said Joab, and thus he answered me.

En Benája het by die tabernakel van die HERE gekom, en tot hom gesê, So sê die koning, Kom uit. En hy het gesê, Nee; maar ek sal hier sterwe. En Benája het die koning die antwoord gebring, en gesê, So het Joab gespreek, en so het hy my geantwoord.

And the king said unto him, Do as he hath said, and fall upon him, and bury him; that thou mayest take away the innocent blood, which Joab shed, from me, and from the house of my father.

En die koning het tot hom gesê, Doen soos hy gesê het, en val op hom, en begrawe hom; dat jy die onskuldige bloed wat Joab gestort het, van my en van die huis van my vader mag wegneem.

And the LORD shall return his blood upon his own head, who fell upon two men more righteous and better than he, and slew them with the sword, my father David not knowing [thereof, to wit], Abner the son of Ner, captain of the host of Israel, and Amasa the son of Jether, captain of the host of Judah.

En die HERE sal sy bloed op sy eie hoof terugbring, wat op twee manne aangeval het wat regverdiger en beter was as hy, en hulle met die swaard doodgemaak het, terwyl my vader Dawid dit nie geweet het nie, naamlik Abner die seun van Ner, owerste van die leër van Israel, en Amasa die seun van Jeter, owerste van die leër van Juda.

Their blood shall therefore return upon the head of Joab, and upon the head of his seed for ever: but upon David, and upon his seed, and upon his house, and upon his throne, shall there be peace for ever from the LORD.

Hulle bloed sal dan op die hoof van Joab, en op die hoof van sy saad vir ewig terugkom: maar op Dawid, en op sy saad, en op sy huis, en op sy troon, sal daar vir ewig vrede van die HERE wees.

So Benaiah the son of Jehoiada went up, and fell upon him, and slew him: and he was buried in his own house in the wilderness.

So het Benája die seun van Jójada dan opgegaan, en op hom geval, en hom doodgemaak: en hy is in sy eie huis in die wildernis begrawe.

And the king put Benaiah the son of Jehoiada in his room over the host: and Zadok the priest did the king put in the room of Abiathar.

En die koning het Benája die seun van Jójada in sy plek oor die leër aangestel: en Sadok die priester het die koning in die plek van Abjatar aangestel.

And the king sent and called for Shimei, and said unto him, Build thee an house in Jerusalem, and dwell there, and go not forth thence any whither.

En die koning het gestuur en Símeï geroep, en tot hom gesê, Bou vir jou ’n huis in Jérusalem, en woon daar, en gaan nie daarvandaan êrens uit nie.

For it shall be, [that] on the day thou goest out, and passest over the brook Kidron, thou shalt know for certain that thou shalt surely die: thy blood shall be upon thine own head.

Want dit sal wees, op die dag dat jy uitgaan, en deur die spruit Kidron trek, weet sekerlik dat jy sekerlik sal sterwe: jou bloed sal op jou eie hoof wees.

And Shimei said unto the king, The saying [is] good: as my lord the king hath said, so will thy servant do. And Shimei dwelt in Jerusalem many days.

En Símeï het tot die koning gesê, Die woord is goed: soos my heer die koning gesê het, so sal jou dienaar doen. En Símeï het baie dae in Jérusalem gewoon.

And it came to pass at the end of three years, that two of the servants of Shimei ran away unto Achish son of Maachah king of Gath. And they told Shimei, saying, Behold, thy servants [be] in Gath.

En dit was so aan die end van drie jaar, dat twee van die dienaars van Símeï na Agis die seun van Máoga, koning van Gat, weggehardloop het. En hulle het Símeï vertel, en gesê, Kyk, jou dienaars is in Gat.

And Shimei arose, and saddled his ass, and went to Gath to Achish to seek his servants: and Shimei went, and brought his servants from Gath.

En Símeï het opgestaan, en sy esel opgesaal, en na Gat by Agis gegaan om sy dienaars te soek: en Símeï het gegaan, en sy dienaars uit Gat gebring.

And it was told Solomon that Shimei had gone from Jerusalem to Gath, and was come again.

En dit is aan Salomo vertel dat Símeï van Jérusalem na Gat gegaan het, en teruggekeer het.

And the king sent and called for Shimei, and said unto him, Did I not make thee to swear by the LORD, and protested unto thee, saying, Know for a certain, on the day thou goest out, and walkest abroad any whither, that thou shalt surely die? and thou saidst unto me, The word [that] I have heard [is] good.

En die koning het gestuur en Símeï geroep, en tot hom gesê, Het ek jou nie by die HERE gesweer, en jou besweer, en gesê, Weet sekerlik, op die dag dat jy uitgaan, en êrens heen trek, dat jy sekerlik sal sterwe nie? en jy het tot my gesê, Die woord wat ek gehoor het, is goed.

Why then hast thou not kept the oath of the LORD, and the commandment that I have charged thee with?

Waarom het jy dan nie die eed van die HERE, en die gebod wat ek jou beveel het, onderhou nie?

The king said moreover to Shimei, Thou knowest all the wickedness which thine heart is privy to, that thou didst to David my father: therefore the LORD shall return thy wickedness upon thine own head;

Die koning het verder tot Símeï gesê, Jy weet al die boosheid wat jou hart bewus is, wat jy aan Dawid my vader gedoen het: daarom het die HERE jou boosheid op jou eie hoof teruggebring;

And king Solomon [shall be] blessed, and the throne of David shall be established before the LORD for ever.

En koning Salomo sal geseënd wees, en die troon van Dawid sal voor die HERE vir ewig bevestig word.

So the king commanded Benaiah the son of Jehoiada; which went out, and fell upon him, that he died. And the kingdom was established in the hand of Solomon.

So het die koning dan Benája die seun van Jójada beveel; wat uitgegaan het, en op hom geval het, dat hy gesterwe het. En die koninkryk is in die hand van Salomo bevestig.
